Hospital leaks to be fixed next year

PARKTOWN – Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital will have water leaks fixed only next February.

Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital is being plagued by persistent leaks from its ceiling and this will only be fixed in February 2017.

DA shadow MEC for Health Jack Bloom said that this was revealed by the Gauteng MEC for Health Qedani Mahlangu in a written response to his questions in the Gauteng Legislature.

Bloom said that in the response Mahlangu pointed out that most of the leaks identified were due to central heating pipes and that temporary measures have been implemented by putting clamps around the pipes, while the department continues to replace dilapidated central heating pipes.

Adding to that, the response added that repairs were done on a continuous basis, as soon as they were detected or reported and that renovations on the central heating system needed to be done in block one, four and five and would be done during the summer months.

Mahlangu addressed the issue of the leaks at the hospital and pointed out that the leaks were due to structural problems and said that the building was not a new building. “The leaks affect the patients as well as the machines in the hospital and we are hoping that very soon this will be a thing in the past,” Mahlangu said.

“I hope that the promised repairs are done as patients and staff are disturbed by water or sewage leaks that occur particularly when it rains,” Bloom said.

He added that it was a poor image for a leading hospital to have buckets on the floor in various sections including the oncology and pediatric wards.
