King David casts their bread upon the waters

VICTORY PARK – The Matzah Man teaches the pupils of King David School valuable lessons of goodwill before Passover.

King David Victory Park Pre-Primary and Primary School recently went beyond the prescribed syllabus in anticipation of the Festival of Pesach.

The Matzah Man paid a visit to the pupils and taught them the significance of eating Matzah – a type of flatbread – during Pesach and encouraged to spare a thought to those families less fortunate, who are unable to afford Matzah and the other special food for Pesach as well as to appeal to the children and their families to lend a helping hand.

The Pesach festival, also known as Passover, is known as the holiday of freedom, which commemorates the Jewish Exodus from Egypt. Passover is regarded as the beginning of the Jewish nation and is an eight-day holiday. This year Passover falls between the 22 and 30 April.

The most common reason for eating matzah over the festival is that on the morning of the Exodus, the Jews were so rushed to get out of Egypt that the bread didn’t have time to rise.

“The children were inspired and motivated to get involved in bringing joy to less fortunate families during this happy time of Pesach. They listened with intrigue about how their simple acts of kindness in donating could change the way we functioned as a community, bringing hope and spreading joy,” said Nirvana Rogers, King David Victory Park campus marketing manager.

Collection points have been set up at the reception areas of the school where children can donate special Pesach food, which will be collected by the Chevra Kadisha, the oldest Jewish organisation in Johannesburg, on 18 April and distributed to families in need.
