VICTORY PARK – High School pupils do Abba justice with their stage production, The Winner Takes it All.

The Winner Takes it All, Waterloo, Super Trouper and Dancing Queen – talented pupils from De La Salle Holy Cross College High School took the audience straight from 2016 into the groovy era of disco balls and retro costumes with their Abba stage production, The Winner Takes It All.

The musical took place on 5 April and was produced by Renos Spanoudes and directed by Kyla Davis. The musical was part of the school’s annual stage production. The cast was made up of 30 pupils ranging from the choir, supporting roles and leads.

The show was inspired by Abba’s Mamma Mia and the film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It told the story of Diana de Gouveia (Cailin Connel) getting ready to marry her long-time lover, Steven Rodrigues (Michael Tuson). Her difficult family life however makes the planning process a bit difficult.

Every situation in the musical, whether it was good or bad, was supported by an Abba song and saw members of the audience sing along while bobbing their heads to the music. All the pupils performed the songs themselves, and were accompanied by a live band. Saranti Reeders, famous for her role in the game show, Lirieke Raai, played the piano, but was also the show’s musical director. Her son Cole Reeders, played the part of Vaughn Davids in the musical.

The band was further made of Peter Sklair on the bass, Jethro Butow on guitar and Rob Watson on drums. The pupils put on quite a convincing performance to music that they are likely to have not known beforehand, as Abba made name for themselves in the 1970s.

The show’s success was also contributed to the talented backstage, lighting and sound crew, done exclusively by pupils of De La Salle Holy Cross College.
