The Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch spent the evening and early hours of the next morning with Pikitup as they assisted and escorted the workers through Sophiatown in an effort to clear bins and black bags in the suburb.
According to Dauw Steyn, the chairperson of Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch, it was quite interesting for the patrol team to experience what Pikitup workers do daily and gained insight into their struggles and issues. Many residents joined in and helped the neighbourhood watch or just popped over to give thanks for their efforts on 29 and 30 March.
“To every person who patrolled I wish to say thank you. You have made a huge difference in this diverse suburb. Our crime is down and with the social programmes and community initiatives, we have a much cleaner suburb,” said Steyn.
“Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch has an excellent team and the difference made by this team is seen daily. Making Sophiatown work and beautiful has not been an overnight success but a process driven by dedicated men and woman who believe in their suburb,” Steyn added.
Every two months the neighbourhood watch and Sophiatown residents participate in a clean-up of their own to keep the streets clean, and many residents are part of a street network WhatsApp group that shares relevant information about crime and issues in the suburb. “If you are not part of this network yet get involved now,” Steyn advised.
