German Olympics an athletic fest

AUCKLAND PARK – DSJ shows off their pupils' athletic talent and breaks some records in the process.

The Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (DSJ) participated in the German Schools of South Africa bi-annual Olympiade and competed against five other German schools around the country.

As the name suggests, the olympiade encompasses the spirit of the Olympic Games with the schools competing in athletics, swimming and ball games, for example, tennis, volleyball, handball, basketball and football. DSJ has traditionally dominated the event and has won 12 of the previous 15 editions of the games. The school was very optimistic that they would add a 13th title to their name this year.

Despite their best efforts, the DSJ team was narrowly beaten by the Deutsche Internationale Schule Kapstadt in swimming, settled for third place in athletics and only missed out on first place in the ball games due to a technicality. Therefore, DSJ placed third overall, behind winners Deutsche Internationale Schule Kapstadt and second-placed Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek.

However, there were some sterling individual performances from the DSJ athletes. Bongi Molefe and Miguel Reuss both broke olympiade records in their respective javelin events. Reuss was also part of the team, which also included Christian Kanwischer, Matthew Sommer and Sebastian Welke, that broke the senior 50m medley relay record.

The Deutsche Schule Pretoria played host to this, the 16th Olympiade, from 11 to 16 March. The schools that participated included DSJ, Deutsche Internationale Schule Kapstadt, Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg, Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek and Deutsche Schule Pretoria. For the first time, Deutsche Schule Accra was welcomed to the event and joined in with a junior team of 11 athletes.

“All in all, this year’s olympiade was one to remember. All five schools look forward to the next olympiade in Windhoek in 2018,” said Savo Ceprnich, DSJ marketing and public relations manager.
