Pikitup intensifies contingency measures in wake of worker protest

JOBURG – None of Pikitups 3 500 workers have returned to work and this has forced the waste management entity to put contingency measures in place.

Despite Pikitup sending pre-termination notices to some of its protesting workers, no one has yet been fired as threatened by the waste management entity.

However, as promised, Pikitup has implemented their contingency measures as their 3 500 workers have yet to return to work since embarking on a protest about their salaries as well as management disputes, Pikitup said in a statement on 17 March.

“The City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity is intensifying its contingency measures to counter the effects of the waste collection service disruptions, despite intimidation by some striking workers,” the statement read. It continued to urge residents and business owners to keep bins and excess waste outside their properties to ensure that waste is collected through the contingency measures that have been put in place. “It is important to note that in certain instances collection is done during the night and may continue throughout the week until normal services resume,” Pikitup said.

The statement added that commercial customers must liaise with their customer service consultants to schedule collection.

The statement appealed to residents and business owners to recycle their waste in order to reduce the waste going to the landfill sites, and where possible, drop off their waste at their nearest garden refuse site. “We appeal to residents to work with us in order to ensure the safety of the third-party contractors,” the statement concluded.

Contingency measures Pikitup has put in place:

• Pikitup is collecting waste from the municipal clinics and hospitals, and from some of its bulk customers

• The ‘dailies’ service is currently only taking place on a period basis

• Decanting of all the Garden Sites is currently taking place

• Collection of recyclable materials continues in participating areas.
