Mind sports no match for Northcliff High

NORTHCLIFF - Pupils dominate in the latest mind sports championship

The pupils of Northcliff High School emerged champs at the 20th Mindsports South Africa North West Championships, sponsored by Mweb and hosted by St Conrad’s College in Klerksdorp.

The championship attracted players from both North West, Mpumulanga and Gauteng. Players battled it out to earn the title of champion and the right to fight for a place in the 2016 National Team Trials that will ultimately deliver a team to the International eSports Federation‘s 8th World Championships in Jakarta from 6 to 9 October.

Schools, universities and individuals could enter into the championship. Northcliff High excelled in Dota 2 and Mortal Kombat X and placed first in both categories. Northcliff High Grade 12 pupil, Kyle Chan Some, received his Gauteng provincial colours as he bagged the title of champ for Mortal Kombat X.

Noelene du Toit, teacher in charge of the mind sports extramural at Northcliff High, said, “It is a great achievement for Kyle as he has been involved in mind sports since he was in Grade 8. It was great to see him receive colours for all his hard work.”

According to Du Toit, mind sports is treated like any other sport at the school and even has a inter-house tournament which was held in February. The extramural has been established at the school since 2008 and continues to hold interest at Northcliff High as around 50 members participated in an inter-schools tournament earlier this year.
