Three suspects were shot dead following a car chase and shootout with the police on the Soweto Highway on Thursday.
Captain Tekisho Mofokeng, provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the incident.
He said “A group of students were reporting a robbery to the police in Auckland Park, when the robbers drove past them. The police tried to stop the car but it did not stop,” Mofokeng said.
The police gave chase and they caught up with the fleeing suspects on the Soweto Highway where a shootout occurred.
“All three suspects were fatally wounded and the police confiscated two unlicensed firearms as well as the stolen property,” said Mofokeng.
According to him, this was a joint operation between the Brixton and the Soweto Police.
