A Pitch full of talent

GREENSIDE – Pirates Sports Club hosted the annual Golden Lions Club sevens Competition and put on a spectacular event.

Pirates Sports Club hosted the annual Golden Lions Club sevens Competition for the first time on 27 to 28 February.

Teams came ready to win and it showed through their outright desire to come out on top.

The winners for the event were [University of Johannesburg] rugby team, who won the senior plate finals. The Raiders also left nothing to chance when they walked away with the junior plate finals.

Pirates Sports Club chairman, Brad Guymer, said that the event was everything he expected it to be and a whole lot more. He explained that the competition moves from club to club as each get the chance to host the event for two years.

“This was our first hosting of this great event and it was a major success for us and the teams that played,” said Guymer.

He went on to add that the competition, that spanned two days, had about 2 000 fans come through and show their support. He further divulged that there were 40 teams, which included about 22 senior teams and 18 junior teams on day two of the tournament.

It was an intense tournament as clubs such as Joburg Police, Alberton, Randfontein, Germiston Simmer along with the hosting club, were out to show their best performance.

As always there where some big upsets with probably the biggest being the Simmer victory over UJ in the pool stages which meant that the winner would come from the open clubs. Guymer went on to praise the referees and officials that managed to keep things running at the set time, which made the event flow as smoothly as any event could.

“It’s always going to be a challenge to host such a big competition, but it was a great experience and we are definitely glad to have had the opportunity to host it. We look forward to 2017 to do it all again,” said Guymer.

On the day of competition Randfontein finished third in the senior competition and hosts Pirates Sports Club came third in their junior competitions. The UJ junior team also walked away with a win as they received a cup for their division.
