JUST IN: Varsity Cup extends postponement

WESTDENE – FNB Varsity Cup postponed due to concerns over student safety at games.

The FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International announced that all games will be postponed until further notice.

All varsity cup fixtures on 1 March were postponed to allow all universities across the country the opportunity to address challenges at their various campuses.

This announcement comes after management first postponed all fixtures for 29 February.

“The well-being and safety of all students and those attending and participating in our events are of the utmost importance,” said Duister Bosman, Varsity Cup CEO.

University of Johannesburg (UJ) senior manager of operations, facilities and advancement of sport, Francois Fouche commented on the safety of students and spectators during the games. “The disruption is a precautionary measure. Any unsafe action is bad for sport and bad for student sport.

“It is a sad day for sport as many of these players use this platform to further their rugby careers, but we understand and fully support managements’ decision of not putting students at any risk,” added Fouche.
