The man behind Wits Sport

PARKTOWN – Kim Lucas, Wits Sports Council chairperson, reveals his love for mathematics and romantic comedies.

Wits Sports Council chairperson, Kim Lucas (22), is a driven young individual with a passion for mathematics and dedication to God.

Through his childhood, Lucas lived in Cape Town and attended St George’s Grammar School. To further his studies, Lucas moved to Johannesburg and enrolled at Wits University in 2012. He enrolled at the engineering faculty but after a change of heart pursued a triple major in corporate finance and investments, marketing, and mathematics.

In 2013, Lucas became a member of the Tang Soo Do Club and was elected club chairperson in 2014. Lucas became Wits Sports Council treasurer in 2015 and now sits as chairperson of the council.

Lucas added, “Last year I noticed areas I believed I could improve with regard to the operational procedures of the Wits Sports Council and expressed my views with others. We, as a collective, believed that I could make a difference, whereby I thus reached for the position of being the chairperson.”

He initiates projects on the council’s behalf and is the council’s official representative and spokesperson, facilitating communication between the council and various faculties. The basic requirements to be elected as chairperson are a good rapport with the university and a record of service for the council. The council comprises of chairpersons of all recognised sports clubs as well as its executive members. To be elected as an executive member, you have to be voted in by your constituents in an annual election.

Lucas remains positive through his busy schedule. “At times you put yourself in a difficult situation where you need to do multiple things at the same time. What helps is my love for mathematics, as it makes studying a whole lot easier. When you love what you are studying, when you have the drive to help others, the reassurance from friends and family around you, and a dedication to God, everything will fall into place,” he said.

Beyond his university duties, Lucas said many people say he has a hard exterior, but his ideal Friday night would be spent under blankets with hot chocolate and a romantic comedy.
