Historians restore love for old buildings

WESTDENE – Heritage survey and love for history live in the local women's hearts.

Two historians, Monika Läuferts and Judith Mavunganidze, bring back people’s love for old historical buildings and areas.

Läuferts from Westdene is an architectural historian and Mavunganidze from Melville is a historian.

The two qualified historians founded Tsica Heritage Consultants in 2008.

They said their goal is to raise awareness in the public sector about the importance and wealth of cultural history and the heritage of this country.

The women met at a previous job where they worked together before founding their own.

They both have a long working history in the field of heritage. They research and document old buildings and historical areas for the SA cities.

“The current project on Corridors of Freedom where we are looking at historical areas around Brixton and Auckland Park , was awarded to us in June 2015 by the City of Joburg and will be finalised mid 2016.

“We are also looking forward to launch our book on the history of the Johannesburg Gas Works soon,” said Läuferts.

The women said Tsica specialises in heritage impact assessments on provincial and national levels and historical reports in all fields.

“Our main interest lies in the protection and documentation of the heritage of the historically significant places in Southern Africa,” said Mavunganidze.

When they started, their first project was an architectural-historical survey of 7th Street in Melville.

Some of their completed projects include documentation and supervision of restoration work at Sammy Marks Museum in Pretoria which was declared a National Monument’s site in 1988; alteration of the library at the Roedean School in Parktown designed in 1903 and research on mine dumps in Joburg.

They have done architectural-historical surveys on 7th Street and 4th Avenue in Melville, Parkhurst, Parktown, Parkwood, Houghton, Emmarentia, Melville, Bezuidenhout Valley, Jeppestown and Mayfair.
