Busy Bees knit beautiful items for charity

ROOSEVELT PARK–Members of the Busy Bees knit items for charities ahead of winter.

The Busy Bees is an organisation that is based at Rose Village, where members of this organisation meet every Thursday and knit various items for charities.

Busy Bees founder Doreen Smith said they initially started the organisation as a means to get residents to socialise with each other and knit items for charity. “We couldn’t stop knitting since we started over four years ago, we have been knitting since. Besides the charity work we do, we have formed great fellowship with each other,”said Smith.

In preparation for the Easter holidays, Busy Bees spokesperson Joan Mooney said that the members are knitting beanies for residents at the Jordan House Old Age Home  in Westbury. They have been knitting for the past two weeks and aim to knit 90 beanies for members of the old age home.

“We knit items for Sesego Cares who donates the wool we use. We use the money they donate to the Rose Village to improve our living conditions and will also use some of the proceeds to buy residents at Jordan House Old Age Home groceries. Last year we knitted over 2000 items that Sesego Cares distributed to various charities they support,” said Mooney.

Pupils from Parktown High School for Girls prepared a Valentine’s tea and cake for the Rose Village on their knitting day. Pupil Darlene Frost said that they brought the residents cupcakes, cookies and cake. They plan to entertain the residents by singing them songs that they had rehearsed.

“I believe it is important to give back to our elders who did a number of things for the community when they were younger. We would like to do community work like they did in their earlier years, to thank them for their contribution to our society,” explained Frost.
