5-year sewage leak continues

WESTDENE –This problem occurs every time there is heavy rain.

A sewage leak, corner Motor Street and Lewes Road, seems to be a never-ending problem in Westdene.

The leak in question started on 13 February, allowing tons of rotten water, toilet paper engulf the area with a putrid smell. Westdene residents say this has been happening for nearly five years now.

Not even a month later, the problem continued, spilling the sewage water to as far as the cycle lane across the street.

In December it yet again began to overflow.

Ward 69 Councillor Katja Naumann said, “The spill happens mostly after heavy rain.” She added, “This has occurred before. In 2015 Joburg Water did some repairs to the system and cleared all blockages. The current overflow is due to a new blockage.”

Joburg Water external communications officer Eleanor Mavimbela confirmed that Joburg Water inspectors investigated the area on 16 February in the evening. “We were able to fix it and they are still investigating as to what the primary problem is.”

According to Mavimbela, the inspectors found cloths in the drain which may be the cause of the blockage.
