AUCKLAND PARK – The Study in Europe Fair 2016 welcomed 62 countries and eager students to provide opportunities to broaden horizons.

The Division for Internationalisation at the University of Johannesburg hosted the Study in Europe Fair 2016 at the UJ Kingsway campus in Auckland Park on 15 February.

The fair welcomed 62 universities, international funding agencies and embassies, as well as funding opportunities to students and staff from the University of Johannesburg and other institutions in Johannesburg. “It is an excellent opportunity for the university to showcase its facilities and expertise to European institutions as an academic destination for their students to study abroad or higher degrees,” said Lebethe Malefo, director of the Study Abroad, Division for Internationalisation, UJ.

The fair made for an interactive experience where European countries like Austria, Belgium, Spain, Germany and more had a chance to explain their programmes, study directions and funding opportunities to students, staff and their parents.

Dr Arno Schaefer, the Minister Counsellor from the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of South Africa was a guest speaker at the event and opened the fair at the Sanlam Auditorium. He read a testimony from a UJ student who studied abroad and mentioned that the lifelong friends she made there was the most valuable.

Deputy Vice Principal of UJ, Prof Tshilidzi Marwala said that it is very important for students to have this opportunity as we can not progress economically as a country if we don’t see how other countries work. “Europe is an important part of the world as they are the leaders economically, politically and socially,” said Prof Marwala. He added that this gives students the opportunity to see the world.

Representatives from the 62 countries came out ready with information to interest eager students even further.
