Registrations go well for UJ

AUCKLAND PARK – University of Johannesburg orientates the first year students to a new way of life.

University of Johannesburg registrations go well and thousands have attended the orientation programme. Registrations opened on 11 January with about 85 per cent of students having registered and paid the initial instalments for the year.

The institution had more than 43 000 students registered by 4 February at a pace that is at par with previous years.

UJ Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Strategic Services, Ms Mpho Letlape, said the numbers confirmed that the University’s online-only registration system is working smoothly and that this has been embraced by students.

At the same time, thousands of new first-year undergraduate students are attending the University’s orientation programme which commenced this week.

“More than 5 500 postgraduate students and over 1 700 international students have also already registered,” said Letlape. “This is a very clear indication that the vast majority of the university’s students and community want the academic year to get under way smoothly, on time and without disruptions.”

The University’s orientation programme, know as the First Year Seminar (FYS), has seen thousands of new first-year students exploring UJ’s campuses and facilities. The programme, which ends on 5 February, assists students to transition from high school to tertiary education, while creating opportunities for them to meet lecturers and get to know their fellow students.

During FYS, new students get acquainted with a range of academic development and support services at the University, while also learning about the dedicated team who looks after their safety, as well as services available at the health clinics on each campus.

Letlape said that during their first year, UJ students are assisted by third or fourth-year students who do well academically. The student advisors also assist the students who live in UJ residences.

“The aim is to ease the student’s transition from high school and help them adapt to the university environment and to achieve academically,” said Letlape.

The university’s online registration process will remain open until the end of day on 5 February.
