Wits hits the ground running

BRAAMFONTEIN – Witsies kick up some dust between East and West campuses.

Wits University students met at Sturrock Park on 2 February to run the annual night run as part of orientation week. The route started at the park and ran through East and West campus before ending at the Tower of Light. Many students, alumni and staff participated in the 5km run.

“The run is a way to kick off the year’s festivities. There are other runs later on in the year but this is the first. It normally is a very happy environment,” said Wits Sports chairperson, Kim Lucas. “There were roughly the same number of sign-ups as last year but not as many runners. I think between the beer garden and other activities some people ended up elsewhere,” Lucas joked.

Those who participated were rewarded. The first five male and female runners were given free full Wits gym memberships for this year. “We aim to make it even bigger next year,” added Lucas.

“The run is a lot of fun. You don’t dare mention the concept of an uphill to the runners, in case they complain, but it is a great way to start the year and for people to see the campus and generally appreciate it. Since the race is at this time, the sun is setting and when it hits the grass lawns it looks beautiful,” commented Michael Schrenk, one of the route marshals.

First years, Kathryn Magee and Katie Lawrenson were tired within the first 100m. “Some people stopped and asked us for directions which made us feel important and like third-years,” Lawrenson chuckled.

Whatever the reason for enjoying the run, all the participants looked happily exhausted after their efforts.
