Wits rugby team prepares for Varsity Shield

BRAAMFONTEIN – Warren Whitely wishes the Wits rugby team the best for their new season.

The University of Witwatersrand (Wits) rugby team rallied support by hosting a breakfast on 29 January with guest speaker Warren Whitely and Johan Ackerman.

Master of Ceremonies was none other than Gcobani Bobo, former Golden Lions and Springbok player. He spoke about the spirituality of playing rugby as well as the camaraderie. Johan Ackerman, coach of the Golden Lions, wished the Wits rugby team well for their new season. “[Playing] must come from within yourself because there is nothing more important than your jersey.” He added that a team with a good character is important and a serving team creates a good atmosphere. “On behalf of the Golden Lions we wish the Wits rugby team well during their campaign.”

Newly appointed Golden Lions captain Warren Whitely said, “The Golden Lions season is going to be a challenge logistically but it is nothing we haven’t prepared for.” His advice for the Wits rugby team was to be positive and grow through the strong leaderships at Wits.

Wits rugby team head coach Hugo van As said, “We are positive with where we stand but also understand our challenges…Our aim to stay humble but strong.”
