Tips to prevent crime if you live in Brixton

BRIXTON – Theft out of motor vehicle still a concern.

The Brixton SAPS have highlighted crime spots and trends in their area, they have also provided tips on how to minimise and prevent crimes.

Theft of motor vehicle- Problematic areas:

Melville, Braamfontein Werf, Crosby, Brixton and Mayfair West

Focus times: Throughout the day, especially 8pm until 12am and 4am until 8am

Focus days: Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays

Tips to prevent theft of motor vehicle:

• Residents are warned against parking their cars on the street and urged to park where there is enough street light.

Theft out of motor vehicle – Problematic areas:

Mayfair, Melville, Brixton, Vrededorp and Crosby

Focus times: 4am until 12am and 4pm until 8pm

Focus days: Wednesdays, Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Tips to prevent theft out of motor vehicle:

• Make sure car doors and windows are locked properly

• Do not leave any valuables visible in the vehicle

• When using a remote make sure doors are locked before leaving your vehicle.

Burglary Residential – Problematic areas:

Brixton, Mayfair and Rossmore

Focus times: 12am until 4am, 8am until 12pm and 4pm until 8pm

Focus days: Thursdays and Fridays.

Tips to prevent residential burglary:

• The community should know their neighbours. Try to establish a street watch

• Call SAPS if you see someone suspicious in the street

• Secure entry and exit routes to your property

• Test alarms regularly.

In the case of robberies:

• Do not make yourself a walking target by walking around with expensive cellphones and laptops

• Where possible, do not walk alone

• Do not approach strangers to ask for directions.
