136 suspects arrested during cluster weekend operations

JOHANNESBURG – The Hilbrow Cluster nab numerous suspected criminals over the weekend.

During the weekend, 136 suspects were arrested for various crimes by different SAPS clusters. The suspects were arrested at the Hillbrow Cluster: Parkview, Jeppe, Norwood, Rosebank, Linden, Cleveland, Hillbrow and Yeoville SAPS.

Two suspects were arrested for murder, 10 for business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms as well as ammunition, one for possession of abalone, seven for armed robbery, five for suspected stolen property, 31 for drunk driving and two for reckless and negligent driving. The other suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from contempt of court, jay-walking, fraud, theft, assault, malicious damage to property and gambling.

Among the arrested was one suspect arrested for an alleged murder that occurred at the Jeppe Hostel in the early hours of Sunday morning, where a 32-year-old victim was stabbed several times on the body allegedly by the 39-year-old suspect following an altercation. The suspect was swiftly arrested within the vicinity of the hostel.

A 30-year-old man was also arrested for contravening the living marine resource act, he was found in possession of abalone, two unlicensed firearms, foreign currency valued at just under R2 million and suspected stolen cell phones. The arrest occurred in Cyrildene Rollo Street Johannesburg following the tracking of cell phones that were allegedly stolen from Northgate on an earlier date. Organized crime has taken over the investigation.

These suspects appeared at various courts from Monday morning.

Following the shooting of a Linden police officer on 24 January, a man-hunt has been launched by the Hillbrow Police Station. It is alleged that the police officer that was off-duty was shot and wounded in the face following an argument at the corners of Edith Carvel and Kotze Street in Hillbrow. The suspect who drives a white VW Golf is known to the community and an arrest is yet to be made. A case of attempted murder has been opened and is under investigation. The police urges the community members who have knowledge of his whereabouts to come forward. The Linden police officer is in a stable condition at a local private hospital.
