Children of Fire’s musical workshop

AUCKLAND PARK – Children of Fire charity shares musical experience with British musicians.

British musician Shaun James made fire victims smile on 12 January.

James visited the Children of Fire in Auckland Park where he organised a musical workshop for the children.

The musical workshop is a pilot scheme and has been designed to give teachers the necessary basic skills to provide children with a new start to the school day.

Ellie Ndlovu, an intern from the charity, said James came to know about the charity when his band visited Joburg in June last year.

“He then promised to come back and be with the children. The workshop is his creation,” said Ndlovu.

She said the children love music and happily participated.

The children were allowed an opportunity to perform on stage.

James said music therapy is a proven tool and with some extra elements in listening and performance, the children have experienced a musical wake up for voice, body and mind.

Some of the different elements they saw and heard were the introduction and first stages of the VOCES8 Method book, which prepares children for their school day and develops key learning skills which will have a conscious and sub-conscious effect on their academic learning process.

“I would like to thank the Children of Fire for making me so welcome and allowing me to work with the children on this project,” said James.

Children of Fire is a charity based in the UK and in South Africa that assists badly burned children with reconstructive surgery and other necessities.

It was founded to help the young survivors of burn injuries in Africa and also aims to help the communities in which the children live and educate them.
