ROOSEVELT PARK – The Jimmy Robertson Mixed Pairs Tournament commemorates the life of a former fellow bowler.

The Roosevelt Park Bowling Club hosted its annual Jimmy Robertson Mixed Pairs Tournament on 10 January which saw 24 teams go bowl for bowl.

The two-day tournament, which is now in its fourth year, had teams from all over Joburg come together to prepare themselves for the upcoming JBA Mixed Pairs to be held at various bowling clubs around Joburg. The event also has a much deeper meaning for the Roosevelt Park bowlers, as this is also a way to commemorate late bowler, Jimmy Robertson who was beloved by all at the club.

Pam Landau, the organiser of the event, was pleased with the turnout and was glad that he initiated a wonderful way to remember one of their own.

“The event went very well, and this was a great way to remember Jimmy, because he loved the sport so much and here we are all family, so he meant a great deal to all of us,” said Dreyer.

The tournament spanned two days. Three games were meant to be played on 9 January. However, the thunderstorm called the bowlers off the pitch. On the second day of tournament, the players continued with the game they had put on hold, along with the two scheduled games for that day.

Jane Joyce, who, along with her husband, placed second in the tournament. She said that she enjoyed the event immensely.

“We were rained off on Saturday but we came back on Sunday and we were eager and ready to play again,” said Joyce. “We were meant to play two games but we played two and half games both days.” Wife of the late Jimmy Robertson, Sue Robertson also played in the tournament.

The winners for the tournament were:

  • First Place: Estelle Herzenberg and Keith van der Linde
  • Second Place: Charles Joyce and Jane Joyce
  • Third Place: Wayne Smith and Vanessa Sergeant.
