Smart traffic, smart city

JOBURG - The Johannesburg Roads Agency developed a geographic information system for the City's traffic lights.

The City of Johannesburg will see a complete transformation of how the Johannesburg Roads Agency monitors and manages traffic signals, from the diagnostic review of faults, to the manner in which they are repaired and maintained.

This according to the agency’s spokesperson, Bertha Peters-Scheepers.

The developed Smart Traffic System is part of the geographic information system-based (GIS) smart cities initiative that the City has undertaken.

“The purpose of this system is to facilitate the capture of detailed traffic signal data reported by the existing Remote Monitoring System and to provide a detailed analysis of traffic signal faults.

“This not only allows for more accurate data collection, recording and trend analysis but also enables the roads agency to monitor and manage traffic-signal intersections in a more proactive manner by reducing downtime to a minimal and ensuring that any faults that do occur are fixed rapidly and permanently,” said Peters-Scheepers.

The City plans to improve its systems of allocating and maintaining addresses across the 1 644 square kilometre municipality through its Corporate Geo-Informatics unit.

The GIS system ran for the first time this year in partnership with the University of the Witwatersrand’s Joburg Centre for Software Engineering and mapping software company, Esri South Africa.

The unit, within the Department of Development Planning, provides geographic feature maps and detailed information, including density, height zone, parking requirements, building lines, full area reports and zoning certificates, on all Johannesburg’s properties. This interactive map can be viewed online and if you find it difficult to navigate, Corporate GIS provides training on the use thereof.
