Rape allegations lead to shebeen closure

GREENSIDE – Mamas Shebeen in Greenside has closed its doors after rape allegations.

Mama’s Shebeen, where Nelson Mandela’s grandson Mbuso Mandela allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl, has closed down due to a loss of revenue on 9 December. The owner of the establishment Yaw Dwomoh said that the business took a turn for the worse after the rape allegations surfaced and this kept patrons away.

“The turnover dropped by 44 per cent since Mamma’s was unjustifiably associated with the alleged rape incident, which didn’t happen on Mamma’s premises,” Dwomoh claimed.

He pointed out that before the allegations surfaced his business was making around R274 000 a month which then dropped to around R158 000 a month afterwards.

“I have 20 employees who have now lost their jobs because of other people’s actions,” he said. He added that immediately after the allegations surfaced his business began to suffer losses and that he now would have to find a job just to survive.

The trial of Mbuso Mandela has been set to start in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on 9 March next year.

The 24-year-old has been charged with raping a 15-year-old girl at a bar in Greenside in August and is currently out on bail of R7 000.
