Helping Hands commemorates World Aids Day

BERARIO – Helping Hands Berario teaches residents about HIV/Aids.

Helping Hands Berario Organisation commemorated World Aids Day on 4 December.

Luti Kumalo the founder of the non-profit organisation said that even though Aids-related deaths were down, people were still getting infected by the virus. “It is important for us to teach and educate the public about the virus and how to avoid infection and also how to live with it,” she said. She added that the organisation was established to support communities in their effort to mitigate the impact of HIV/Aids and other chronic diseases.

She pointed out that the purpose of the commemoration was to educate and encourage the community to test and know their status, especially the youth. “The use of condoms and being faithful to one partner are very important tools to fight the disease,” she explained. Kumalo added that residents were taught how to put on a condom for both men and women.

Candles were lit to remember those who passed away and to show support for those who are living with HIV/Aids. “The only problem that we are still faced with is the stigma surrounding HIV/Aids. Most of the youth, especially girls, are getting infection from sugar daddies who buy expensive gifts for them. As the organisation we think we need to empower our girls morally and give them support and education,” she concluded.
