Basetsana apologises to viewers of OPW show
LINDEN – Our Perfect Wedding episode gets South African viewers furious.
An episode of reality TV show Our Perfect Wedding that was aired on 29 November had Mzansi Magic viewers livid.
Our Perfect Wedding [OPW] produced by Connect TV is based in Linden, and one of the producers is Basetsana Kumalo.
This is a reality show that follows the lives of various couples and gives viewers a front-row seat to what they deem as the perfect wedding.
In the latest episode of OPW, Fanie and Bavelile Mkwhanazi’s perfect wedding turned out to be an absolute disaster and had the entire country outraged.
Fanie, who is a pastor, proudly revealed that he met his wife when she was a 14-year-old-school-girl and he was a 28-year-old-taxi-driver.
He explained how he preyed and targeted young girls and how he also slept with them.
Fanie revealed details of his sexual exploits with school girls and how he met Bavelile, who had to continuously fight for his affection.
Bavelile’s mother initially did not approve of the relationship but eventually gave her blessing for the two to get married.
Viewers were furious to why Mzansi Magic, produced by MultiChoice which is based in Randburg, would air such an episode, especially during the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse.
OPW producer Basetsana Kumalo and M-Net CEO Yolisa Phahle released a statement, “Mzansi Magic and its production company, Connect TV, wish to apologise for airing of the OPW episode. While we strive to produce quality, compelling content for our viewers, we realise more stringent measures should have been applied in the production and broadcasting of this particular episode as its subject matter is clearly unacceptable. While the screening of our programmes does not mean we condone the behaviour included in them, we are reviewing our processes to ensure that this type of content is not part of our programming schedule in the future.”
