GALLERY: Art exhibition in support of 16 Days of Activism

BRAAMFONTEIN – Young women showcase their creative artwork that was created as a form of empowerment.

The Amazing Empowerment Exhibition was launched on 17 November at Constitutional Hill in support of the celebration of Disability Month and 16 Days of Activism against gender violence.

The exhibition is hosted by Afrika Tikkun Empowerment Programme, children with disabilities and their families, the Afrika Tikkun Gender-Based Violence Programme, Constitutional Hill and the Constitutional Court Art Collection.

The exhibition runs from 20 November to 10 December. Visitors can experience a guided walk-through on 11am and 3pm on 4 and 5 December.

Afrikka Tikkun head of development, marketing and communications Onyi Nwaneri said that this initiative celebrates the vulnerability of children and people living with disabilities and gender-based violence.

The art work was created by young women part of the Afrika Tikkun Gender-Based Violence Programme. The pieces illustrate the contrast between the reality we exist in and how things should be, in the context of human rights and gender-based violence in Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

The first wing showcases the creations of young urban women from the Afrikka Tikkun GBV Programme. The second wing focuses on children with disabilities and their families.

“Afikka Tikkun noticed that the most common form of violence is towards women, children and those who have disabilities. We aim to find and apply methods that empower them on how to deal with challenges they face,” Nwaneri said.

Akrika Tikkun development executive Catherine van Schoor said that the art empowered the artists who made it.

“Most of the girls are victims of rape and abuse and we want to teach them that it is not about where you are from but rather about finding positive ways to empower themselves,” Schoor said.
