GALLERY: Hive of activities at the Christmas market

PARKVIEW – Parkview Charity Christmas Market is not only for entertainment and shopping but also for a good cause.

It was a hive of activities for three days at the Parkview Charity Christmas Market which commenced on 27 until 29 November at the George Hay Park in Parkview.

Christmas offerings such as different gift items, live entertainment, beer, food and shopping ensured that the market was exciting, entertaining and provided treats for the entire family.

The Nicarela charity, through the selfless efforts of volunteers and in-kind sponsorship have allowed various outreach projects in and around Johannesburg to share in the warmth of Christmas through proceeds from the market.

Mike Hume from Nicarela charities said the market was started by about five people who felt a need to help various children and women organisations in Johannesburg nine years ago.

It has since been set up by a group of about 20 committee members who all have day jobs and drive no income from the market. “It cost us an estimated R600 000 to set up with measure sponsors,” he said.

He further indicated that the funds they raised in the previous years were distributed to various organisations. “Basically it is just a big coming together of the communities in Johannesburg. It is a real fun family entertainment event for three days long,” explained Hume.

He added that the entertainment programme was phenomenal and the most exciting element about the market was that the raised funds would be donated to various charity organisations.

“I think that the fulfilment that one gets from being able to help the community is fulfilling. We have been growing –13 000 people have respond and we can only hope and pray that the blessings keep going on,” he concluded.

One of the stall owners from Melville Hildegard, who preferred to be only known by her first name, said she had exhibited her paintings all over the world.

“My parents are painters and I felt a need to participate in the market. I try by all means to paint a gift that is more personal and a bit different,” she concluded.
