A sad outcome for the SANCA Phoenix House

MARTINDALE – Most parts of the SANCA Phoenix house is being closed due to an ongoing financial difficulty.

Despite doing everything in their power, the SANCA Phoenix House in Martindale will need to close a large part of their organisation. The Phoenix House’s financial situation has been going down hill since the Department of Social Development could not provide the necessary funds.

Adrie Vermeulen, director of the SANCA Phoenix House, stands outside of the in-patient clinic – the only part of the organisation that will remain open.

The Phoenix House, which is a rehabilitation centre for people struggling with substance abuse, received a donation which will help them keep the in-patient clinic open. This clinic caters for about 20 patients for three to six weeks while they go through withdrawal symptoms. “We need to finalise this donation as it should still be signed on the dotted line,” director of the Phoenix House, Adrie Vermeulen said. She added that unfortunately the parts of the organisation, funded by the Department of Social Development needs to close. “These include the two out-patient clinics in Sophiatown and Ebony Park in Midrand and precautionary care services. Kemoja, our community service also needs to close,” said Vermeulen. Kemoja is a job creation project. According to Vermeulen volunteers go to schools to hand out workbooks as part of this project.

“Sadly I am busy with retrenchments for the last 15 personnel and 20 volunteers,” said a disappointed Vermeulen.

In aid of the Phoenix House, The Chefs Association Gauteng will host a comedy evening on 10 December at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton. Five comedians offered to entertain people for free. The tickets are R150 per person and include a set menu meal.
