VICTORY PARK – De La Salle Holy Cross College pupils board the train of music and fun.

De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior School Choir and Marimba Ensemble arrived at Rhodesfield Station to board a special vintage steam train to Irene on 21 November.

The 36 excited children accompanied by parents and staff, enjoyed the thrilling journey behind the magnificent 70-year old locomotive, SAR Class 15F, No. 3046 ‘JANINE’, owned by the Reefsteamers Association in Germiston.

Amid the intoxicating clouds of smoke, oil and steam, and accompanied by the rattling of wheels on steel, the children entertained a party of British and Swiss tourists with an impromptu concert.

On arrival at Irene Station, buses awaited to ferry the group to the popular Dairy Farm and Village Market for lunch and some early Christmas shopping, before everyone happily boarded the train for the relaxing return trip.

“Thanks to Reefsteamers in Germiston for a special school outing to Irene with their vintage steam locomotive JANINE – it was a memorable experience for everyone,” said Neil Bennett from the College music department.
