Thumbs up for Joburg tourism

JOBURG – Sometimes as residents we might forget what a phenomenal city Joburg is. Its colourful, fast-paced and vibrant history has translated into an urban culture to match. Often, seeing your home city through a different lens or filter helps you to appreciate it even more.

Joburg is the African continent’s business hub and the fastest growing and developing metropolitan centre. It is a cosmopolitan destination with plenty to offer curious and adventurous urban travellers.

Laura Vercueil of Johannesburg Tourism says, “In spite of Joburg’s youthfulness in global city terms, it is undeniably a treasure trove of economic, social, political and anthropological history. The City boasts layers upon layers of fascinating history, development and human interest stories – of course not forgetting the leisure and lifestyle aspects of entertainment, sports, music, arts and culture. This is a city with a colourful past and a future filled with excitement, potential and promise.”

Vercueil says urban tourism is coming into its own in Joburg, with an increasing number of visitors keen to explore diverse aspects of the city – from all the exciting developments downtown (including Braamfontein and the CBD) to the established heritage routes, sites and attractions of Soweto and Alex – and not forgetting the lifestyle activities such as the Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein and the Sunday market at Arts on Main.

“As articulated in the city’s Growth and Development Strategy (GDS 2040), tourism remains an economic growth imperative on the City’s agenda. It is an important catalyst to encourage the development of the SMME sector in order to encourage the growth and development of a vibrant second economy,” Vercueil concludes.
