Newborn dies at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital

CORONATIONVILLE – A 22-year-old mother said that nurses shouted at her when she arrived at the hospital.

A new born baby has passed away at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital on 17 November.

According to reports, the 22-year-old mother claimed that nurses at the hospital shouted at her when she arrived to deliver the baby.

This follows a report in August where a pregnant woman was refused help, and delivered a premature baby.

The Gauteng Department of Health (GPH) spokesperson Steve Mabona said, “We are still investigating the circumstance around the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, we will communicate the outcomes in due course.”

According to Mabona the department has employed a psychologist to train nurses to assist in patient care. “The first posting will be today at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, where nurses will be assisted on how to manage challenging patients.” This is in regards to diversity, cultural differences, language, how to focus better professionally, identify system challenges, and team work between departments.

Gauteng Health MEC, Qedani Mahlangu announced the appointment of specialised nurses where intern nurses will work on as ward clerks. According to the department, this will better improve the workload on nurses.

Mabona added that a quarterly patient survey will be conducted as opposed to the annual report. “The survey will focus on the priority areas, namely cleanliness, staff attitude, availability of medicine supplies and food, the explanation of medical conditions and availability of nurses and doctors at all times.”

“We trust this paradigm shift will be felt in how our nurses render services and it will be easy to pick up which areas and hospitals need intervention from the patient’s survey. Staff attitude is a work-in-progress, we plead for cooperation from the public,” said MEC Mahlangu.
