EMS warns of more hail storms

JOBURG – EMS warns motorists to take necessary precautions as more hail storms are anticipated.

Joburg Emergency Management Service (EMS) warned of further hail storms this week and urged motorists to take necessary precautions while driving, as many roads might be slippery due to the rain.

“We also advise them to avoid flooded roads and refrain from taking a chance to cross flooded bridges to avoid incidents where vehicles might be swept away,” explained Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

He further advised school children to stay away from flooded river streams, dams, and drainage systems as they walk to school and back.

The entity also promised to be on high alert, monitoring all low-lying areas around the city.

The entity will be assisted by its automatic rainfall systems which were installed in the most critical areas – mostly the informal settlements throughout the city. The systems relay information to the entity about how much rain is falling in an area.

“This is to make sure that if there is a need for evacuations we can be able to do so,” said Mulaudzi.

He concluded that they would also be monitoring all their emergency shelters which were initiated earlier this week due to the shack fire in Alexandra, Msawawa in Kya Sand and Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland.

“For any life threatening emergencies call 10177, a toll free Telkom landline, or 112 on your cell phone,” concluded Mulaudzi.
