Water restriction levels explained

JOBURG – City urges residents, and business owners to use water sparingly.

If residents from City of Joburg are not using water sparingly the city would be forced to move to level three water restrictions.

The MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Matshidiso Mfikoe explained that the city was notified by Rand Water about the further deterioration in the bulk supply system recommending a high level water supply restriction.

The City had evoked Section 44 (3) of the water services bylaw – a level two restriction which is more serious than the level one, with level one restriction being an appeal to residents and customers to use water responsibly and sparingly as a mitigation factor.

“We urge members of the public to report non-compliance to these restrictions to 011 688 1699 or customerserviceemails@jwater.co.za, explained MMC Mfikoe.

Level 2 restriction requires residents, business owners and consumers not to use water to irrigate their gardens during 6am and 6pm, not to fill their swimming pools and not to use hosepipes to wash their cars or paved areas.

Although water would be available, the system supply pressure would also be reduced.

Mfikoe further explained that if the situation deteriorates the City would impose a level three restriction and this means that water would be supplied at stipulated times in a day, mainly in the morning and the evening.

“There would be no water supply outside of those stipulated times. In order to avoid level three restrictions, consumers are strongly urged to comply with level two restriction,” she said.

Consumers were advised to comply with the level two restriction to avoid moving to level three restriction.
