Sophiatown dry for three days

SOPHIATOWN – Heat wave is blamed for water outage in Sophiatown.

There has not been running water in Sophiatown since 7 November.

Sophiatown neighbourhood Watch Chairperson Dauw Steyn said, “We have sent numerous emails to Joburg Water.” He added, “Sophiatown has now almost three days struggling with water supply. [Our] taps are dry.”

Also, water pressure is low in Brixton and surrounding areas.

On Joburg Water’s (JW) Twitter account they claimed that, “This is due to high water supply demand caused by the lack of rain and continuous heatwave.”

Ward 86 councillor Steve Kotze commented, “From what I was told from JW, it is due to the heat wave and an unusual consumption of water.” He added, “[There is a problem] especially in higher lying areas like Sophiatown where we have flats that use tanks that use pressure to pump the water to the top.” Kotze further explained that due to the lack of water the tanks have become empty.

He added that the Hursthill reservoir is at a very low level.

“A water tanker was deployed but it was depleted quickly, I have urgently requested a replacement and have put a lot of pressure on JW management,” said Kotze.

Questions were sent to Joburg Water acting manager of marketing communications David Sibiya and Joburg Water external communications officer Eleanor Mavimbela.
