Resident shot during armed robbery in Greymont

GREYMONT – A customer was shot during an armed robbery at a store in Greymont.

A resident from Newlands was shot during an armed robbery at a store in Greymont on 8 November.

The incident occurred at the corner of 7th Road and Long Street.

Four unknown suspects were allegedly robbing a shop owner at gun point when the resident walked in to purchase airtime. When he realised that it was a robbery he tried to escape but was shot.

According to Sophiatown Police spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn, the suspects fled with cigarettes worth R2 500, R1 200 cash and three cellphones. They allegedly threatened the business owner with the gun before the resident walked into the shop.

WO de Bruyn could not confirm how many times the resident was shot but indicated that he was shot in the shoulder.

“He was shot outside the shop and we do not know why the robbers shot at him. We are investigating a case of robbery,” he said.

Newlands Community Patrol chairperson Gerda Lourens said that the resident was rushed off to the hospital. “A special thanks to Suburban Crime Prevention, Sophiatown SAPS, who were quick on scene and ER24 who arrived soon after,” said Lourens.

She added that she spoke to the family of the injured resident and they confirmed that the victim was recovering. “Please keep him in our prayers for a quick recovery and let us as a community stand together and start saying no to crime,” concluded Lourens.

Roland Grote from Suburban Crime Prevention said the robbers drove away in a black Volkswagen Jetta. “One of our clients in the area heard gun shots. We responded quickly and called the emergency personnel and the police who assisted,” said Grote.
