BRIXTON - Some of the students from the University of Johannesburg continue sing while waiting for others to be released from Brixton Police Station on 7 November.
More than 100 students of University of Johannesburg have been released on warning from Brixton Police Station on 7 November.
Provincial Police spokesperson Captain Tshekiso Mofokeng confirmed that more than 100 students have been released on warning and they will appear in the Magistrates’ Court on Monday [9 November].
150 UJ students were arrested on 6 November for contravening a court order obtained by the university. It is understood that 9 lawyers are representing the students and some Pro bono.
Parents and community members wait patiently for the release of other students and some brought food and toiletries for those who slept at the police station since 6 November.
SRC president at UJ, Khutso Rammutla said “The university sent an SMS to the arrested students notifying them that, they were suspended.”
Some students continued to sing as they wait outside of the police station for their colleagues to be released and they complained about the police treatment. “We are very frustrated and not satisfied with the way the police are handling the matter,” said Lindokuhle Xulu, a political science student at UJ.
