MELVILLE – The Men's Foundation launched the annual Movember campaign in Melville.

Men’s Foundation, a non-profit organisation, launched its annual global campaign known as Movember at the Buzz 9 in Melville on 28 October,

The campaign seeks to highlight men’s health issues such as depression, prostate cancer and other forms of health-related diseases.

Movember, stands for the moustache ‘Mo’ and November. Founder and CEO Garron Gsell explained that the campaign encourages men to grow moustaches for the month of November and raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues.

“The campaign specifically focuses on prostate and testicular cancer, as well as the mental and physical health of men,” said Gsell.

He said there is a global stigma around diseases that affect men.

“Men often do not talk about issues they are experiencing and concerns they may have. By avoiding the subject it affects the early detection of cancer and their life expectancy. Movember aims to create a world where men do not have to suffer or succumb to diseases which are both preventable and manageable if detected early,” said Gsell.

Gsell said this year’s Movember campaign’s theme is Shaped by Experience.

The underlying message of the theme is to choose to live a healthy lifestyle. “If attention is paid to health and warning signs a better and more carefree future will be ensured,” he said.

Gsell encouraged men to join the campaign by becoming a ‘Mo Bro’ on [www.movember.com] and women can also join in an become a ‘Mo Sista’ on Movember.com.

“When signing up to the Movember website, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas can choose to make the commitment to MOVE. This commitment can include any form of exercise from a daily brisk walk, running, cycling or simply taking the stairs instead of the elevator,” said Gsell.

He concluded and said even the smallest bit of physical activity on a day, is a way of investing in health and improving chances for a healthier, happier and longer life.
