Wits adamant that classes will resume

BRAAMFONTEIN – Wits university's Vice Chancellor Professor Adam Habib will address the issue of outsourcing in a bid to quell the remnants of the student protest.

Wits university management are adamant that despite disruptions to classes on 28 October, academic activities will resume to normal.

Wits released the statement through its website stating that police members had restored calm at the university and removed barricades to the entrances.

29 October saw a much calmer atmosphere at the university with several police cars stationed outside the main entrance on Empire Road. Police members could be seen actively patrolling in and around the school with the bus service transporting students to lectures.

Wits Vice Chancellor Professor Adam Habib is set to address the students and workers on today, 29 October inside Senate House on the matter of outsourcing.

Cleaners at the university had previously joined the students in their zero per cent fees increase protest and said that they did not see why fees had to increase because their salaries had remained the same throughout previous fees increases. The workers highlighted their low-wage salaries, pointing out that they were only paid between R2 500 and R2 700 per month.

The cleaners demanded that the university put an end to outsourcing and permanently employ them in order for them to have full employee benefits.
