SOPHIATOWN – Sparrow Combined School pupils participated in planting vegetables as part of the Nedbank personal loans vegetable tunnel handover.

The Nedbank personal loans tunnel handover took place on 27 October at Sparrow Combined School in Sophiatown where Nedbank donated a tunnel for pupils to grow spinach for the school.

Nedbank representative Justine Bolton said that the vegetable tunnel handover was sponsored by Nedbank personal loans, who are involved in a number of community initiatives.

“Nedbank is serious about looking after the community, sustainability initiatives and teaching young people how to grow and take care of a vegetable garden. This project addresses food security issues that fall under Nedbank’s aim to provide the community with skills and create job creation,” she said.

Bolton explained to the students how to plant vegetables in the garden, and how to take care of them. The pupils from Sparrow Combined School participated by placing soil into bags where spinach plants will be planted and grow.

City of Joburg Social Development Department representative Zandile Zwane said that the aim of the initiative is to empower the pupils with skills. The Agri Resource in Westbury will help maintain the vegetable garden with resources.

“We would like to inspire the pupils to take an interest in agriculture to eventually pursue it as a career in the future,” she said.

Principal of the school Mark Cloete said that the Nedbank personal loans vegetable tunnel is an ongoing project that helps raise funds for the school. The spinach is sold at the tuck shop where teachers and pupils can purchase it to raise funds that will go toward the school.
