Read SA’s electricity history

JOBURG – AMEU launched a new coffee-table book detailing the institutions's contribution toward the development of the electricity sector in SA.

The Association of Municipal Electricity Utilities (AMEU) Southern Africa has launched a new coffee table book that details AMEU’s 100-year timeline of its contribution toward the development of the electricity sector in SA.

The book that documents the history of electricity in South Africa forms part of AMEU’s centenary celebrations.

City Power spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele said AMEU is an association that has a direct interest in the electricity supply in South Africa.

Mphalele described the book as an insightful and interesting read.

“The book does not only show the history of the Association but also paints a vivid picture in words of the era in which the Association was born,” said Mphahlele.

AMEU President Sicelo Xulu said the book documents a rich heritage of the milestones the electricity industry has achieved in South Africa over the last century.

“This book is a rich source of reference that can be used by academia and is a celebration of 100 years of excellence. It is a reminder of the importance on building on the achievements that we have attained in the last hundred years,” said Xulu.

He concluded that the book is a must-read for any organisation with the ambition to sustain itself for 100 years and beyond.

Mphahlele said AMEU is in the process of engaging with bookshops to sell the book publicly and with academic institutions to have the book available at their libraries for research purposes.

Currently the book can be bought on AMEU’s website.
