Blade to lead debate on Higher Education transformation

JOBURG– Members of National Assembly to debate the transformation of higher education following the nationwide student protests.

Members of Parliament (MPs) are expected to debate the transformation on higher education in the country on the afternoon of 27 October following the nationwide students protest.

The debate would be led by the Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande and is expected to occur from 2pm until 6.30pm at the National Assembly (NA) in Cape Town.

This debate follows the historical #FeesMustFall campaign which commenced at Wits University on 14 October when students began the protest against the 10.5 per cent fee increment for next year.

It later escalated to other academic institutions and on 23 October students from various universities marched to the Union Building in Pretoria where President Jacob Zuma announced that there would be no fee increment for 2016.

National Assembly Media Coordinator Nolizwi Magwagwa said in a statement that the debate will provide an important public platform for the consideration of the issue.

“Political parties through their elected representatives in the NA will raise their views,” she indicated in a statement.

Members’ statements and the introduction of five bills were scheduled for NA’s consideration before the debate.

These are the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill, the Financial Sector Regulation Bill, the Financial Intelligence Centre Bill, the Finance Bill and the National Development Bank Special Appropriation Bill for the 2015/16 Financial Year.

Residents can watch the live debate on parliamentary channel on DSTV channel 408 or live stream it on YouTube.
