LINDEN – Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys celebrates chess players young and old.

Chess mates checked at Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys on 24 October.

The chess tournament was held in the spirit of the Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys ‘Louwtjie Fees’.

The chess festival hosted pupils from as young as Grade R up to Grade 7.

Teacher and chess coordinator Lee van Niekerk said, “We do a lot for chess at our school. We also promote chess on a big scale with at least two practices a week.”

She added that all four of their chess teams won at the Joburg North West chess championships earlier this year.

“Our development team and U9s came in second. Our U11s placed first with the mixed team coming in second,” explained Van Niekerk.

The seven board play saw the children enjoying competitive but fun games of chess.

Chess administrator Corno Klaver commented, “It is great to see all these children competing today. The best part of today is seeing so many girls playing and, of course, winning.”

The ranking for the Grade R competition are as follows:

Kyle Nolan – First with 5.0 points,

Caitlyn Smith – Second with 4.5 points,

Lana van den Berg – Third with 3.0 points.
