Sophiatown Community Programme hosts fundraiser

SOPHIATOWN – A fundraising initiative will be hosted at the Barnyard Theatre Cresta with '50 Carats Gold'.

The Sophiatown Community Programme registered as the SCPF, a non-profit organisation, in 2012 and is approved by the South African Revenue Services as a Public Benefit Organsisation.

The aim of the foundation is to raise funds for the support of community-based initiatives of the Sophiatown Police Station and its related Community Policing Forum (CPF).

Volunteer Sue Petzer said the SCPF is hosting a fundraising initiative at the Barnyard Theatre Cresta with the show, 50 Carat Gold on 18 November.

“The funds raised will go toward community-based initiatives associated with the Sophiatown Police Station, including the Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC) and the community patrols that were recently established by Roosevelt and Montgomery Park residents,” she said.

The SCPF is governed by a board of five independent directors who are all residents in Sophiatown. Martin Petzer is responsible for fundraising initiatives, and is responsible for organising the show.

He said that 100 out of 150 seats have already been occupied since the tickets went on sale. “We are pleased with the response we have received from residents and the public. We hope people will support the cause that goes toward initiatives the Sophiatown Police Station are involved with,” he said.

The VEC consists of qualified volunteers from the community who provide victims of crime with support and counselling to help them cope with the ordeal.

“These professionals give selflessly of their time and provide invaluable support to the victims of crime in our communities. The Foundation Board believes that this initiative is deserving of ongoing support and appeals to businesses and residents in the Sophiatown Police Precinct to assist in this regard,” Petzer said.
