Parkview police arrest car-jamming suspects

PARKHURST – Car-jamming suspects are arrested after returning to the same garage where they committed a similar offence.

Two suspects aged 34 and 35 respectively, were arrested by Parkview Police on 19 October. This occurred after a manager from a local garage recognised one of the suspects from the video footage of an incident of theft out of motor vehicle on 22 September.

Parkview Police communication officer Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha said that the video footage showed a Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by the victim pulling over at a fuel garage where he went into the store. The suspect then broke into the vehicle and immediately came out carrying a bag and got into a nearby getaway vehicle which drove off.

The suspects committed a similar offence at the same garage which led to their arrest after the garage owner had alerted the police as soon as he noticed the suspects coming back again.

According to Sgt Ramovha, car jamming incidents are common in the area, where suspects monitor motorists in parking lots, and pressing the lock button of their own remote at the same time the car owner locks their car, in order to jam the signal.

The two suspects have since appeared in the Hilbrow Magistrates’ Court and were charged with theft out of a motor vehicle.

Police appeal to all motorist to be cautious when locking their vehicles and to always physically check the doors are locked after using the remote.
