JOBURG – A Westbury Secondary teacher and his friend was tied up and drowned in the Rhodes Park dam.

It was revealed that one of the two men who was tied up and drowned at Rhodes Park in Kensington on 17 October, was a teacher at Westbury Secondary School.

The school posted this message on Facebook, “Westbury Secondary mourns the death of Mr Kela. Condolences to the family at this sad time. May he RIP.”

Another resident, Bree Jaftha commented, “Condolences to the Kela family and to his wife to be as well as to the entire staff and pupils at the school.”

SAPS Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini explained that two couples were walking in the park when they were confronted by a group of 12 men at around 7pm.

Dlamini said it is alleged that one of the suspects was armed with a hand gun.

“The two men were tied up and thrown into the park’s dam where they then drowned.” said Dlamini.

He further said one of the woman managed to escape but the other was raped by one of the suspects.

Dlamini said police were summoned to the scene but the suspects had already fled once they arrived.

“Police divers were called to the scene and recovered the two men’s bodies from the dam. The men were certified as dead by the paramedics on scene,” said Dlamini.

He said the police launched a man hunt for the group of suspects and are requesting the community to inform police if they have any further information.
