UPDATE: Illegal tree feller to be fined

FAIRLAND – Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo issue Fairland Tennis Club chairperson with a bill.

Long-standing trees that were cut down in a Fairland Park on Kessel Street on 1 October will have their justice.

Previously it was reported that two trees had been cut down.

According to Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) spokesperson  Jenny Moodley, four trees were in fact illegally felled.

Moodley stated, “Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo attempted to serve the transgressor with an invoice for over R130 000 for the four valuable trees that he illegally felled.” It now turns out that according to Moodley, the person in question refuses to accept the invoice.

“[He] originally [advised] that he was well positioned to compensate the City with the replacement value of the established trees. He now maintains that he has referred the matter to his attorneys,” said Moodley. To date, JCPZ has not been issued with an attorney’s letter.

Ward 98 Councillor Laurette Van Zijl could not comment on this particular matter as it is now with the City, however she mentioned that, “In principle it is good to see the City taking such action and I hope to see similar reactions pertaining to damage to any property of the Council, not just trees.”

Moodley added, “A lack of response by the transgressor will result in Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo approaching the City of Joburg’s revenue services to debit the rates account of this facility with the amount owing.” She further added that residents who claim ignorance for felling a City asset will have to be dealt with decisively.

“Any inaction on the part of City Parks will result in the City’s tree canopy being compromised.” The chairperson in question was contacted and refused to comment on the matter as it has been handed to his attorney.
