ALBERTSKROON – Mercantile Bank donates R100 000 to the Portuguese Welfare Society.

On 14 October Mercantile Bank donated a R100 000 to the Portuguese Welfare Society, Lar Rainha Santa Isabel Old Age Home to show their commitment toward the Portuguese community.

Mercantile Bank CEO Karl Kumbier said the bank’s strong Portuguese roots prompted the donation.

“Because Mercantile Bank is 100 per cent owned by Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the largest bank in Portugal, we are deeply entrenched in the South African Portuguese community. We are therefore honoured to be given the opportunity to support the residents of Lar Rainha Santa Isabel Home,” said Kumbier.

Portuguese Welfare Society’s chairperson of the executive committee, Isabel Policarpo said they are grateful for the donation as this will allow them to procure 23 beds for their frail-care unit.

Policarpo said the unit will be ready to accept residents in November 2015.

“We rely heavily on the generosity of our Portuguese community as well as many other benefactors to provide a professional service and assist the

less-fortunate.” said Policarpo.

Kumbier explained Mercantile Bank celebrates its 50th year of existence this year and they wanted to acknowledge the support of the Portuguese community. “If it was not for the members of the community, we would not have achieved the success we have,” said Kumbier.
