Ward 89 councillor congratulates United Nations

ROODEPOORT – Ward 89 councillor Ingrid Reinten has welcomed the endorsement of Sustainable Development Goals, taken by United Nations.

The recent decision made by United Nations at its General Assembly to adopt the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals and inclusion of non-communicable diseases.

DA’s Ward 89 councillor Ingrid Reinten has applauded the UN’s adoption.

“As the SMMC for health and social development in the City of Johannesburg, I would like to congratulate the United Nations, the assembled world leaders and the South African presidency, for endorsing the post 2015 development agenda without reservations,” said Ward 89 councillor Ingrid Reinten.

October is cancer awareness month, and therefore the endorsements has been hailed as a step in the right direction.

Councillor Reinten explained that these goals are a “new” agenda for an integrated and indivisible approach to development and sustainability.

Furthermore, “They stress the universality of our humanity and our commitment to improving the quality of life for all our citizens and to free the potential of each person.”

This Sustainable Development Goal agenda celebrates the UN charter in its 70th year and reaffirms the universal declaration of human rights as the cornerstone for these targets to be built on.

The targets and goals can in many instances also be found in documents such as the National Development Plan and Local Government development strategies; however the crux remains in the collection of information for analysis and oversight through regulatory frameworks.

“There is a call for high quality open data to be able to make smart decisions, particularly at sub-national level.”

Councillor Reinten believes that the end result, in fifteen years’ time, should see inclusive and sustainable urbanisation with local community participation seen as a key factor in implementation of these integrated policies.

“The Democratic Alliance looks forward to contributing to the action necessary in the critical issues relating to people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership,” concluded Reinten.
