Grammy Award winner tops charts

FERNDALE – Wouter Kellerman flies South Africa's flag high after winning a Grammy Award and topping the Billboard World Music Chart.

Grammy Award Winning South African flutist and composer, Wouter Kellerman’s album titled Love Language has debuted at number one on the Billboard World Music Chart.

The album follows up Kellerman’s recent 2015 Grammy Award win with renowned Indian composer and producer Ricky Kej for their debut collaborative album Winds of Samsara for best new age album of The Year.

The album also debuted at number one on the Billboard New Age Chart, staying in the Top 10 for 12 weeks, and debuting at number one on the ZMR World Radio Chart.

The globe-trotting flutist and composer won three 2015 South African Music Awards, reinforcing the artist’s standing as one of South Africa’s most innovative musicians.

Kellerman who grew up in Northcliff, said that he always had a longing to become a full time musician but studied electronic engineering as he wanted to support his family, but as time went on his desire for music became louder.

“I tried to get into music full time but each time I would run out of money, and since I had a family to support, I had to get a job and work,” Kellerman explained.

Finally his two sons grew up, graduated from university and started their own families when Kellerman could dedicate himself to his music.

“When my name was announced as the Grammy winner, I was quite astounded as the competition was very stiff within the category that I was nominated in,” said Kellerman.

Speaking from his Ferndale home, Kellerman encouraged South African artists to take their music to the world as the quality of music in the country is very high.

“As much as music is an art form, many musicians must realise that, it is also a business,” Kellerman added.

He recently performed at the [John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center www.kennedy-center.org] on August 12 in Washington, DC and will be the headline performer at Carnegie Hall on 9 October.

The last few years have seen Kellerman performing in US, Berlin, Shanghai, Sydney and he also performed at the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup closing ceremony.
